$300 Million Awarded to Smoker

In the largest ever award to a single person, a jury awarded a woman $300 million in a settlement against Philip Morris. The plaintiff was 20 years old when she began smoking. She quit when she was 45 years old. That was nearly 20 years ago. Now she has emphysema and requires a lung transplant. The money from the settlement is expected to pay for that transplant, although Philip Morris is appealing the ruling. Read more about the case here.
