It may seem hard to believe, but it’s been 50 years since the 3-point seat belt was invented. We’ve come a long way in vehicle safety since that time. Air bags, sturdier cars, accident warning systems…we’ve seen a lot of improvement in safe driving. But the best is yet to come. Audi seems to lead the way in improvising new ways to make driving safer. Recently Audi has improved safety in three main areas: rear impacts and severe head-on crashes. They’ve equipped their vehicles with special sensors that adjust depending on the type and force of an impact. Auto 123 has specifics:

The rails of the front seats are equipped with sensors that detect whether the seat is in the forward or rearward position. Their data flow into the calculations of the restraint control system. Since the computer knows the approximate position of the occupant in relation to the airbag, it can ensure optimal use of the available forward displacement region – the distance in which the upper body is decelerated by the belt and the airbag – which significantly reduces the effect of the impact on the occupants.

The belt force limiters too react flexibly. In this subsystem, two small torsion bars are interconnected by gears. For smaller and lighter persons, the torsion bars are disengaged promptly. This provides more slack in the seatbelt, enabling the upper body to sink deeply into the airbag, which reduces the force on the thorax. In more violent crashes, the torsion bars are disengaged later or not at all, increasing the belt’s restraining force.

The IIHS has recently awarded no less than four Audi models the “Top Safety Pick” rating again for the second time in a row for their high level of occupant safety. And in the Euro NCAP test the Audi A4 earned the highest rating of five stars.

An early December fireworks show turned bloody when a display fired on a crowd of nearly 200 people. Nine were injured when the display flipped over and shot into the crowd of on-lookers. Some of the victims were children and had suffered first and second-degree burns as well as injuries sustained from the ensuing panic. Luckily there were no serious injuries reported. All were treated at the scene by EMS personnel. Local police are investigating what caused the display to flip over.

The fireworks were a product of Zambelli Fireworks Internationale based out of New Castle. A supervisor of the company was cooperating with Etna police officials to determine what caused the display to tip over. Emergency transportation arrived at the scene. Paramedics treated the nine injured victims at the scene. Many people stood around in shock and horror of what had just taken place.

Police and Fire Department officials tried to keep the crowd from stampeding away from the scene while the injured were treated inside a local store by EMS. The misdirected fireworks also damaged the exterior of three local buildings. The victims remained unidentified.

This amazing story comes out of Seattle, WA where a window washer plummeted 8 stories but stopped about a foot short of the pavement when his rope caught on the second story of the building. On the way down he smashed through a seventh story window, only to bounce back out and continue falling. His hands and legs hit the ground but the rest of his body was stopped only inches short. Miraculously he suffered a few cuts and a broken finger, but walked away from what would have surely been a fatal accident otherwise. Read story here.

It’s almost unbelievable but it’s very fortunate his rope finally caught. It’s a stark reminder that life can be fragile. It’s fortunate that other people below weren’t injured from his fall or from a lost window washing tool. Accidents come in all shapes and sizes. Fortunately there are lawyers out there on your side.

When most people think of personal injury they think of auto accidents or work accidents. They don’t always think of carbon monoxide poisoning. But it could certainly qualify you for a case against someone who is responsible for death or poisoning from carbon monoxide.

It’s known as a silent killer because it’s odorless, tasteless, invisible, and the symptoms are easily attributed to sickness. It causes more than 500 deaths annually in the U.S. The reason it’s so deadly is because it replaces the oxygen in your blood stream and makes it impossible for your body to function. It can also cause permanent brain damage.

Poisoning could happen at home or at work. If you’ve been a victim of carbon monoxide poisoning, call the personal injury attorney Knoxville trusts for a free consultation about your case.

Here’s an excerpt from a great article that describes what it is and how to detect it:

“Although all people and animals can be injured or killed by the gas, those who are most at risk include unborn children, infants, senior citizens, and those with respiratory problems, heart conditions, or anemia.

Where does carbon monoxide come from?

The gas can come from a variety of sources found around the home, including:

Charcoal grills

Heating units

Gas-fueled appliances

Wood-burning fireplaces

Vehicle exhaust systems

Camping stoves

What are the symptoms of exposure?

At low levels of exposure, symptoms of CO poisoning include:

Dizziness

Headaches

Confusion

Fatigue

Disorientation

Nausea

At higher levels of exposure, a person may lose consciousness or die.”

To protect yourself, get detectors installed in your house and at work. Read the full article here.
