Each state insurance commission regulates the minimum amount of property damage liability and personal injury protection. The temptation, then, is to insure yourself for that minimum to save on monthly premiums. But this is not likely to be sufficient should you cause injury to another person or damage to another vehicle. In the state of Tennessee, PIP is not required although you must cover at least $25k for bodily injury and $10k for property damage.

Rather than go with these minimums, it’s highly advisable to get an increased amount of insurance in all categories to protect yourself financially. The risk you run is facing a lawsuit from the other party to cover their medical bills if your insurance limits are not high enough. This insurance article explains more:

When it comes to Tennessee car insurance, the state law for Tennessee requires a minimum coverage of $25,000 for Bodily Injury Liability per injured person. It also requires up to a maximum of $50,000 per accident. The minimum state requirement for Property Damage Liability coverage is $10,000. This type of coverage is generally referred to as 25/50/10 coverage.

What happens if you don’t get car insurance in Tennessee? Law enforcement officers will ask you for proof of insurance at the time of traffic stops or accidents. Insurance companies notify the department of motor vehicles of all policy cancellations, non-renewals, and new policies. If this is the case with you, the law enforcement officer will know it and it could cause you huge fines or worse. Failure to maintain proper insurance could lead to the suspension of your vehicle registration and/or driver license. This can be expensive to the vehicle owner. Be sure that you follow the Tennessee car insurance laws!

After reading the title of this post you may have said “So what?”. But here’s why it’s a relevant topic. A large vehicle such as a bus, SUV, truck, tractor trailer, etc. is driven constantly. And in the case of a bus, it’s stop and go traffic. Let’s hope it works.
